Jennie Cao is a painter making works from in-between spaces. Her work grapples with the unique positionality of being an Asian American artist with an uncertainty about sexuality and gender identity. She seeks to create art to represent the disconnect and desperate reconnection with her own culture, as well as body dysmorphia, interpersonal relationships, and identity. Her current work focuses on Asian American bodies and their perception in the West, and unpacks the violence of fetishization and assimilation. She’s currently pursuing her BFA as sophomore at RISD Painting.
